According to Yahoo News (AP):
The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that local governments may seize people's homes and businesses — even against their will — for private economic development.
Scary news. It used to be that local governments would only remove residents for infrastructure improvements (widening roads) or building schools. Now, if a developer wants your land, he/she just has to appeal to the local government. If your local government says, "yes" to the developer, you are out of your land - no matter what.
So sayeth the libs on the Supreme Court. O'Conner, Rehnquist, Thomas, and Scalia dissented.
Private property rights are the bedrock of this nation.
If there is a time to contact your local, state, and national representatives, the time is now. I have my calls into State Representative Dick Stevenson, US Congressman Phil English, and US Senator Rick Santorum. I'll keep you informed of their stances.
UPDATE: Stevenson told me what I feared to be true - there isn't anything that can be done at the state level. Just hold your local mayor/council responsible and hope we get some new Supreme Court justices.
